andreu balius . barcelona
andreu balius is a graphic designer, specialized in type design. in 2003 he established his digital foundry typerepublic.com, where
he licenses his typefaces and designs custom corporate fonts.
he is associate professor at the pompeu fabra university (barcelona) where he also teaches at the masters program in digital art;
furthermore he teaches at elisava school (barcelona), and is a regular visiting critic in other master and postgraduate programs at
different design schools in spain. he has led workshops in different international schools and universities, including aalto university,
helsinki (finland),universidade tecnica of lisboa (portugal) and unl-santa fe (argentina).
andreu has given lectures at atypI conference 2009 (mexico); imagineIt accademia di belle arti (bologna, italy); bauhaus-universität
(weimar); university of applied sciences and arts of southern switzerland (lugano, switzerland); atypI conference 2006 (lisboa, portugal);
atypI conference 2005 (helsinki, finland) among many others.
he is the author of the book "type at work. the use of type in editorial design" (published in spanish, english and french), and his
articles have appeared in a number of books and journals including “la vanguardia” cultural magazine (spain), “typo magazine”
(czech republic) and “ultrabold”, journal of the st. bride library (uk).
andreu’s awarded works have been featured in a number of exhibitions, including “spanish accent in design” at expo shanghai (china),
“ready to read, book design from spain” at insituto cervantes (new york, usa), “pasión. spanish design” (berlin, germany), “agi congress”
(barcelona) and published in international catalogues and design journals such as “creative review” (uk), “typography tdc-ny” (usa),
“novum” (germany) and “typografische monatsblätter” (switzerland).
