JOEL GETHIN
LEWIS
Joel Gethin Lewis is a London-based con­sult­ant, lecturer and artist with a pas­sion for work that allows for real-time inter­action between people, places, stories and objects.

For over 20 years, Joel's award winning vision and work has enabled cultural organisations, brands and charities to surprise, engage and connect with their audiences in ever more innovative ways.
He studied Mathematics and Computer Science at Imperial College, before com­pleting an MA in Inter­action Design at the Royal College of Art in 2003.

After graduation he went to Fabrica in Italy, before returning to London work­ing as inter­action designer at United Visual Artists. There he toured with the likes of U2 and Massive Attack and helped to create large scale public instal­la­tions including "Volume" at London's V&A museum.

In 2008 Joel co-founded the inter­active col­lec­tive YesYesNo together with Zach Lieberman and Theo Watson as well as co-founding the open source craft, design and tech­nol­ogy studio Hellicar & Lewis, where he pioneered archi­tec­tural scale LED inter­action, real time pro­jec­tion mapping and social network acti­vated sculpture.
Since 2017 he has worked as a con­sult­ant for orga­ni­za­tions such as Universal Everything, Superflux, food.xyz, Preloaded and Google Cultural Institute on inter­active projects that blend the analogue and digital to make some­thing new.

Joel is the course leader of the new Diploma in Apple Development at the Creative Computing Institute in London, where in addition to teaching he is cur­rently research­ing solar-powered com­puting, the history of weaving and global scale aug­mented reality sculpture.
